Proposal: Performance Piece
Ideas your working with
I am playing with the idea that exclusion and uncertainty will provoke the emotion of helplessness and fright. That excluding one sense of a human being, that we rely on our entire life, such as the exclusion of sight can provoke panic.
Describe what your planning on doing
My idea is to find a way to create an emotion of helplessness, and vulnerability. My idea is to have chairs arranged around the room each in a specific place. This is to create an atmosphere in which one person will feel vulnerable. On each chair there will be a set of instructions that will have some of the audience members actively participating in the events and there will be one person in the front of the room facing the wrong way. Once everyone has had time to find a seat and read their instructions one participant will turn off the room lights and another participant will turn on the spot lights. This is when I will enter the room. I will start taunting the one person to look back. I will make loud noises, run as close as I can to the one person whisper. As I perform these tasks some of the audience will interact with what I am doing by the rules written on their card. The person in front will have a few objects that will give the illusion of helping but each object will be defective and not help at all. An example of these objects in a small mirror that with be smudged so they cant use it to look behind them.
Equipment
Shinny butter knife
a smudged small mirror
a very dim flash light
a lighting kit
Inspiration
I am inspired by my curiosity of human nature and what evokes certain emotions. This includes what senses humans rely on to protect them and how they react to this situation.
Help
I do not need help with this project just the audiences participation on performance day.
Overview of Ideas
I have choose to make the emotion of helplessness and vulnerability the main focus of my performance piece because I believe people are rarely put into situations where they feel it. To some it may happen all the time but for others who are usually in control I want to see exactly what it takes and what happens if helplessness and vulnerability is achieved.

Reflections
Self Reflection
My finished project is called “Have You Ever Been Watched”. It consists of nine eyes watching a example clip on the same screen. All these eye are synchronized so they generally follow the same eye movements.
I first started out thinking about what I would find interesting about the human body. It was a toss up between the communication of the hands or the communication of the eyes. My original idea was to film a signal eye and how it communicates when faced with a conversation with another human being. After more thought into my original idea I was interested the similarities of human communication with the eye. This is when I came up with the idea to film nine people facing the same interaction and synchronize them so they can be compared. My idea evolved from a human interaction to a video clip. The video clip allows the subjects to be in an controlled environment. This will allow all the eyes to be faced with the same interaction.
My work is completely visual and has a few different elements to it. First it can be said to be analyzing it’s audience. With the eyes constantly looking out into the crowd it can create the sense of being watched. As mentioned in class it can create a sense of societies constant eye on you. The second element is the experimental side to this project. You can see how the individual communicates with their eye compared to the rest of the subjects. Some concentrate on a particular side, others are sporadically looking from side to side.
I believe I have achieved the acquired goal of creating a sense of being watched with the piece. Comments on the critique reassured my goal. Such comments as “it has a Big Brother feel to it” and “that this feels like societies constant watch on the individual”.
This piece connects with my current theme and interest of human culture and interactions. This piece fits this category by exploring the capabilities and the feelings that the eye can produce.
My piece also can be said to be influenced by the artist and piece of Bill Viola, I Do Not Know What It Is I Am Like, 1986. His piece is an extreme close up of an owls eye. Although just a photograph it explains so much about that owl. The large gazing eye of the owl is illuminated fluorescent yellow suggesting it is a powerful predator. I feel this can be said about my piece. You can get a relative idea on how the person is from the look of there eye and how it moves. A eye that is relatively stationary can suggest a calm person as an eye that is moving all over the place can suggest a person full of curiosity.
Looking back at my proposal I feel like this piece was executed with the same image and idea that was portrayed. I had two main problems while creating this piece. The first was finding nine people who were willing to take time out of their day to help. The second being the amount of time it took to render the effects on the video that was shot. Overall I believe my ideas and techniques were effective creating a visually interesting film.
Reflection of Kirk
The concept of your project is very intriguing. It offers a sense of a memory for a few reasons. First it feels like a memory by the choice of camera you used. Using your cell phone as a camera it made the video bad quality. This improves the sense of memory because often memories are fuzzy and are lacking detail. Just the vague details are present such as shape and color, this is similar to the video you shot. Second the sheet on the projector caused a texture and a grainy feel to your project. This also helps my theory of your project feeling like a memory by making the video appear older. Another characteristic of you piece that made it feel like a memory is the way it was performed. The mistakes and uncertainty of your drawings are similar traits of memory. It gave me this feeling because sometimes people can't always recall the exact scene in a memory and often mix memories up. Another characteristic that I liked and reminded me of it being a memory is the use of fictional characters. In one scene there was a dragon looking figure on a roof. This helped me characterize it as a memory by the reasoning that memories don't alway have to abide to nature, imagination plays a large role.
Overall the piece has a lot of good characteristics and is an interesting way to look at film. On the other hand there are certain parts that could of used some more preparation. Although it was out of your control having more transparencies would of improved your project. This would of helped keep your drawing on time with the video and make your transitions a lot less noticeable. More practice would of been helpful. It felt like your first time interacting with your piece and with more practice you could have eliminated this. When it is obvious that you haven't prepared, it ends up taking away from the piece. This communicates the message that the artist hasn't put much time into this piece and why should we take it seriously. I think it would of been helpful if your video clips were a bit longer. This would have given you more time to draw on your film and allow you to complete all your drawings. This would give the audience more time to appreciate them as well as understand all that is going on.
Your piece was entertaining to watch and is creative. The use of music that was not well know was an excellent choice and soothing. This helped your piece remind the audience of "the good ol days". This piece is suitable for a small audiences and isn't very practical for a gallery. It is not very practical for a gallery because you would have to be there performing all the time. One would almost say it is a video performance piece.
